Cumberland Hospital: Staff forced to spend own money to provide resources

Recently, a number of members have approached your Union delegates and revealed they are spending their own money on a weekly basis on resources to do their job and provide services to patients. This includes buying supplies such as sporting equipment, grocery items for cooking, art supplies, and transport for patients when in the community.

It’s appalling that members feel obliged to spend their own money each week because departments have no allocated budget. Although the money is reimbursed, members often have to wait. This is not an efficient or sustainable method of providing services to the patients.

We know members are dedicated to their roles and often put patients’ needs ahead of their own. However, the provision of resources to provide services for patients is up to management.

Your delegates and representatives will take this matter up further with the Mental Health Executive and in the interim, we will support any member who chooses to cease using their own money for resources.

For further details please contact your local delegates or HSU Organiser Brendan Roberts via [E-Mail not displayed] or 0425 181 361.

If you know someone who isn’t yet an HSU member, encourage them to join today. The more people we represent, the greater our ability to negotiate positive outcomes on members’ behalf. New members can join at or call 1300 478 679.
