Newcastle Linen Service: Shift times update

Back in late June, HealthShare management gave 2 weeks’ notice to members that their shift times were changing from 4:30am to 6am. We sent the information to members for their feedback. The number of responses and the detail you provided was amazing.

The HSU provided your feedback to management to consider. Below are some of the responses from HealthShare:

  • Current workload increases are a direct result of staff shortages, which are actively being addressed. On an operational level tonnage has reduced slightly due to the ongoing use of Spotless Services; and commencing at 6am as opposed to 4:30am is not viewed as directly placing staff at higher risk to workplace injuries.
  • It is acknowledged that most staff have personal responsibilities outside of the workplace, which were the same/similar issues presented and resolved when the original shift pattern was changed from 6am to 4:30am in 2020. It is also noted that whether staff start at 4:30am or 6am, the AM shift will be finished by the time most school’s finish their day.
  • It is acknowledged that this change will cause different disruptions to the personal lives and circumstances of the staff. However, it was communicated at the time of the original change to 4:30am start that this was only going to be a temporary arrangement and was a direct result of COVID-19. Site operations are determined based on the needs and demands of HealthShare NSW; it is unrealistic to modify them to suit each individual staff member and their respective personal circumstances.

The HSU is now seeking 3 members to volunteer to be involved in the USCC (Union Specific Consultative Committee) with HealthShare. If you would like to be involved, please email Tracey Gaddelin [E-Mail not displayed] to express your interest by COB Monday 8 August 2022.
