NSW Government adds insult to injury with 1.5% Wages Cap

Today, the NSW Treasurer Dominic Perrottet announced that the Government would pursue a permanent 1.5% wages cap for public servants, down from the current 2.5%.

Not content with hurting health workers’ families by imposing a pay freeze this year, Mr. Perrottet now wants to rub salt in the wound. The current wages policy is broken and unfair – the proposed policy, even meaner.

It’s not only mean, it’s stupid. This afternoon I stood beside other public sector union leaders to denounce the move, pointing out that it is likely to strangle an economy that’s already on its knees: “Wage growth comes from the public sector and always has. If you cut off public sector wage growth you smother wage growth for everyone.” (see link to story here).

We can’t allow this cruel plan to prevail. Please, redouble your commitment to remove this wages policy, once and for all, and return to reasonable and coherent Awards that reflect the job that you do. With the active involvement of union members, we’ve already proven that the HSU is a force to be reckoned with. We have fought and won countless times to reject policies like these – and we can do it again.

Make sure you speak to your workmates about getting involved in the campaign and – if they haven’t joined yet – joining our Union. Make no mistake, we are in a fight for our lives. This Government intends to hurt health workers – and I for one have no intention of letting them.

The proposed change to the wages cap still needs to pass the NSW Upper House, but I call on you to be ready. New members should join at www.hsu.asn.au/join or call 1300 478 679. Let’s make sure we are all on the same side.
