St Basil's Randwick: Afternoon shift duties

Members at St Basil’s Randwick raised concerns about the new “afternoon shift duties” with Organiser Hyojung Kim during her site visit on 5 December.

The duties list has a tight schedule of duties for the staff on afternoon shift. The biggest concern was the duration of 20-minute meal break. Your Enterprise Agreement clearly states at clause 17.2 that the “meal break shall be of between 30 and 60 minutes duration”.

Members’ concerns have been raised with local management and as a result, on 8 December HR confirmed the following:

  • 30 mins for a meal break, not 20 mins
  • a text message was sent out on 7th of December to all staff about this issue
  • the poster will be checked and removed if this is confusing or incorrect

This is a great outcome for HSU members who took prompt action to protect your rights! As you can see in this case, your Enterprise Agreement is extremely important in protecting and improving your rights at work.

In other great news, St Basil’s is now bargaining for the first time since 2013!  This is your time to negotiate with your employer for better conditions and wages. Come to the members’ meeting on 13 December (11:30am OR 6pm) and be part of the bargaining process.
