Things need to change for trainees and preceptors in NSW Ambulance

ADHSU members responded strongly to the recent survey seeking feedback about current trainee and preceptor experiences. The strong response revealed some concerning feedback about lack of support and burnout on both sides. This is clearly an issue members care deeply about, the first year in the job is an exciting and stressful time and getting it wrong can turn young paramedics away from a rewarding career. In the comments left by members there were many horror stories of overworked, under supported paramedics struggling to keep their heads above water.

The results are clear, something needs to change, and with 1800 new paramedics on the way, it needs to happen now. It is important to note also that there were many comments left praising both the preceptors and trainees for doing an excellent job under difficult circumstances, the issue is not the individual paramedics, this is a system under immense pressure. It’s unacceptable that members suffer to fulfill the premier’s promise.

Tomorrow afternoon, the ADHSU state-wide delegates committee will meet to discuss the results of the survey in full and develop an ADHSU position to put to members. These delegates will then share the outcomes of this discussion with their members locally. Check in with your local delegate and keep an eye out for further updates and surveys.
