WHS issue at Estia Health Bexley Park

  • Published November 10, 2020

Dear Member,

Members at Estia Health, Bexley Park have contacted the HSU regarding a serious WHS concern in the servery areas.

Staff who use the dishwashers in these sections have reported experiencing severe back and wrist pain due to the awkward positions they must assume in completing their daily tasks. This is due to the placement of equipment.

Members have done an excellent job in identifying these problems, raising their concerns, and suggesting possible solutions. The HSU immediately contacted the management of Estia Health and received a response, which states:

  • That management “will be undertaking a hazardous manual handling risk assessment for the servery area” this week and they “will invite [the] kitchen employees to participate in the assessment”.
  • “Following the assessment and in consultation with [the] employees”, they “will identify suitable controls and prepare corrective action plan if required.”

The outcome of the assessment will be provided to Members.

If you are part of the assessment process, discuss with your workmates the issues you want to raise and make sure to identify all of the issues that you are experiencing in the servery section. Everyone has the right to feel safe in the workplace.

This issue was not only raised by members who are working in the servery areas, but also by members who work in other sections. Standing up for your workmate’s rights is what it means to be Union. We are always stronger together.

If you have any ongoing concerns please contact your Organiser, Hyojung Kim at [E-Mail not displayed] or 0458 012 322. If you know someone who joined yet, talk to them about the importance of standing together. Joining is easy: just visit www.hsu.asn.au/join or call 1300 478 679.
