Grace under pressure

HSU members have been doing extraordinary work on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, putting themselves in harm’s way to help those suffering and stop the spread.

Working long hours in dangerous situations, often in full protective gear, HSU members have been the heroes of this pandemic. Their efforts have saved lives, and that’s something you can’t place a dollar value on. “There’s no doubt that our members are the heroes of the pandemic. Day after day, patient after patient, health workers have put in 110%,” said HSU Secretary Gerard Hayes.“I couldn’t be prouder of them.”

Hardworking health staff need a hardworking union, and the HSU has been toiling right alongside members to make sure their rights and safety are protected – even in the middle of a health crisis. Being a frontline worker doesn’t mean you abandon your workplace rights. In fact, the right to consultation over workplace change and the right to a safe work environment are more important than ever. Working together with delegates and sub branches, HSU representatives have been vigilant in upholding members’ rights, and it’s great to receive feedback that shows these efforts are working. Here are just a couple of the messages of support we’ve received recently: “The HSU provided care and support in a very stressful and challenging period. The HSU staff stood with me. Thank you for having such a great team of experts to bring solutions for work related issues.”

“The HSU are still fighting the good fight, not easy considering the obstacles in the way. Thank you for sticking with us all the way throughout this difficult period.” Happily, we’re not the only ones who think HSU members have done an incredible job recently. World-famous athletes, politicians and media figures have all joined the HSU in celebrating the work being done by these amazing women and men.
