Emergency Ambulance Cover

The HSU continues to protect financial members by providing Emergency Ambulance Cover to members who require ambulance response in emergency situations.

Information included on the HSU website is intended to be a guide only and does not supersede the terms of the benefit provided by the HSU. If you have any questions regarding specific cover, please contact the HSU to discuss.

Benefit for HSU Members

This benefit means that eligible financial members are provided with the necessary transportation by emergency transport, in circumstances of injury or sickness, to the nearest available hospital equipped to deal with the nature of the emergency.

The Emergency Ambulance Cover provides for:

  • Road Ambulance
  • Air Ambulance
  • Ambulance response services
  • Full coverage if claimable event is within Australia 

The Emergency Ambulance Cover does not provide for:

  • Emergency ambulance response where financial assistance is available through a legislated scheme, a health insurance policy or any other insurance policy.
  • Coverage outside of Australia
  • Patient Transport Services

Terms and Conditions:

  • The benefit will be payable for eligible financial members who are unable to receive financial assistance for emergency ambulance transportation through a legislated scheme, a health insurance policy or any other insurance policy (for example, CTP, workers compensation, sporting club policy or social security entitlement).
  • The benefit excludes inter-hospital transportation, transport from one home to another, transportation for reasons of convenience or social reasons.
  • The scheme only applies to emergency transport services within Australia.
  • Compensation shall be limited to a maximum of $5,000 per financial member in any financial year.
  • An eligible financial member is a person who is a financial member of the HSU NSW/ACT/QLD.
  • To be covered, a person must be an eligible financial member at the time of making a claim.
  • An eligible financial member is a person who has paid full current dues or is on direct debit or payroll deductions or has an approved waiver of HSU fees (excluding an unemployment waiver).
  • The benefit applies from the HSU membership joining date.
  • The benefit does not apply to life, retired or student members or members who are not paying union fees.
  • The benefit will be paid directly to the emergency transport service and not as a reimbursement to members.
  • A statutory declaration to be provided with the claim form that states all the details provided by the member are true and correct.

How to claim Emergency Ambulance Cover

To lodge a claim please complete the claim form and statutory declaration. Completed forms along with the tax invoice from the emergency ambulance service that was utilised can be emailed to or posted to Level 2, 109 Pitt Street, Sydney NSW 2000 for processing.

Complaints and Disputes

If there is a disputed claim for emergency ambulance costs, all the particulars must be set out in writing and shall be considered and determined by the Union Committee.

Is there a waiting period?

No, the cover is available to members as soon as they join and have made their membership payment.

Will my fees go up for this cover?

No. The Emergency Ambulance Cover is paid out of existing membership revenue.

What if I become unfinancial with the Union, am I still covered?

No. If you become unfinancial, you will not be covered any longer for the Emergency Ambulance Cover.

Will the personal information I provide be kept confidential?

Yes. The information provided will be kept confidential in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 cth.

What if I have already paid the invoice for the Ambulance Service?

On a case-by-case basis the HSU can approve to reimburse members directly if they have already paid the ambulance invoice, provided all other criteria for approval is met.

Does this benefit apply to all states of Australia?

Yes, any emergency ambulance service provided within Australia is covered.

Does this benefit apply to my family?

No, at this stage only financial members are covered by the benefit.
