Bereavement Benefit

The HSU continues to assist financial members by providing a Bereavement Benefit payment upon their death to their next of kin in this time of need.

Benefit for HSU Members

The purpose of this policy is to provide a $5,000 payment to a deceased financial member’s next of kin. While the payment might be used to pay for the member’s funeral, it could also be used for rent assistance, outstanding bills, credit cards etc.

Members will be covered for accidental death and illnesses. This includes pre-existing illnesses.

Terms and Conditions

  • The benefit ceases at the age of 70.
  • To be entitled to the benefit of the policy, you must be an eligible financial member of the HSU at the time of death.
  • An eligible financial member is a person who has paid full current dues or is on direct debit or payroll deductions or has an approved waiver of HSU fees (excluding an unemployment waiver).
  • No Benefit will be payable where the cause of the claim is suicide occurring in the first thirteen (13) months after the HSU joining date.

How to claim the Bereavement Benefit payment

To lodge a claim the following information is required:

  • Completed HSU benefit details form
  • Certified copy of death certificate or Medical Certificate of Cause of Death or Coroner’s Report.
  • Please note if you are submitting a medical certificate it must include the cause of death, otherwise the insurer will request the death certificate.
  • Certified copy of birth certificate, passport or drivers licence of the deceased member.
  • Certified copy of change of name (if applicable).

The completed form along with the required certified documents can be emailed to or posted to Level 2, 109 Pitt Street, Sydney NSW 2000 for processing.

Complaints and Disputes

Any complaints or disputes are to be reported to HSU immediately. We will engage Marsh and/or the insurer (Integrity Australia) as required, to resolve the complaint/dispute.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a waiting period?

No, the policy is available to members as soon as they join and have made their membership payment. Any death by suicide has a 13 month waiting period commencing from their join date.

Will my fees go up for this insurance?

No. The Bereavement Benefit payment is paid out of existing membership revenue.

What if I become unfinancial with the Union, am I still covered?

No. If you become unfinancial you will not be covered any longer by the Bereavement Benefit payment.

Will the personal information I provide be kept confidential?

Yes. The information provided will be kept confidential in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 cth.
