The Productivity Commission is backing the use of independent contractors and online platforms in aged care, as a way of alleviating staff shortages and helping older Australians stay in their own homes for longer.

This goes against the Aged Care Royal Commission's recommendation that direct employees should be preferenced in aged care regulation.

The Health Services Union opposes the finding and says the Productivity Commission is supporting the "Uberisation" of aged care.
