Next Sense/RIDBC Bargaining Update

Your HSU Bargaining Team has been working tirelessly to ensure the voices of HSU members are represented at the bargaining table. We are now at a vital point of negotiations where we are seeking your feedback on important details of pay, classifications, and conditions.

Members’ meeting

An all-members meeting will be held via Zoom on Monday 21 June from 5:30pm to 6:30pm at this link: https://zoom.us/j/98425221073. This is your opportunity to have your say about outstanding issues and next steps.

Classifications and pay

NextSense initially proposed a classification structure that has very wide salary ranges (in some instances the salary variance is up to $50,000 for the same classification). This proposal was strongly rejected by the HSU Bargaining Team, who have argued that:

  • employees with the same classification should be remunerated equally
  • fair pay increases should occur annually
  • with scope to progress to the top of the band via annual increments
  • and historical entitlements are grand-parented

After the union response, NextSense committed to provide a second draft of the classification structure which the HSU is due to receive by Thursday 17 June 2021. When the HSU receives this second draft, we will circulate it to you for feedback.

NextSense has also said to us that they are building a calculation tool to compare how the proposed EA will affect your pay compared to your current EA. We have asked NextSense to arrange a demo session with the unions so that we are across how this works. We will continue to update you once we hear from NextSense.

Annual leave

The first offer by NextSense was to transition employees gradually over 3 years from 8 weeks’ annual leave to 4 weeks’ annual leave plus 2 weeks additional leave over the Christmas/New Year close down period.

On Tuesday 8 June 2021, NextSense provided a second revised offer for employees currently on 8 weeks leave by providing some compensation in addition to the transition. You can view NextSense’s second revised offer here.

We are seeking feedback from members who are currently on 8 weeks annual leave as to your views of this proposal.

Your feedback is needed!

The above issues will be the focus of feedback and discussion on the all-members meeting on Monday 21 June from 5:30pm to 6:30pm: https://zoom.us/j/98425221073. Alternatively, members can send their views to HSU Industrial Officer Ed Yap at [E-Mail not displayed].
