Assistant Secretary Report

It’s been a tough year by anyone’s standards, but I continue to be inspired by the resilience and fortitude shown by HSU members. The way you’ve weathered the storm has been amazing.

I’ve spoken to many members around the state who have told me that working through this year’s lockdown was even harder than last year, due to the more restrictive safety requirements. Working
long hours is even more difficult under several layers of PPE. I think all of our wonderful HSU members deserve recognition for the hard work you’ve put in.

Prior to the lockdown, I was visiting members on our beautiful North Coast, talking to them about issues in the workplace – both COVID-related and otherwise. It’s really important that we remember to stick together and support each other in times like these, no matter how isolated we feel.

Now that lockdown is lifted and it looks like we may finally be granted a reprieve, Gerard and I have started to once again visit our fabulous members all around NSW and the ACT. It was lovely to meet
with members in Narromine, Dubbo, Tweed Heads, Lismore, Armidale, Tamworth and Canberra – and we have a lot more visits to come. I am very convinced that there is nothing like talking face to face – I love to hear everything that members are doing to improve their workplaces, and anything the Union can do to assist with any issues you’re experiencing.

This year has been incredibly busy, and next year promises to be even more so. For now, I hope you all have a lovely and restful holiday period – you deserve it.
