Disability Royal Commission hands down its report

The Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability has handed down its final report. This report is comprised of 12 volumes and makes 222 recommendations on how to improve laws, policies, structures and practices to support people with disability.

You can find the final report here.

The Royal Commission heard many distressing stories of abuse, neglect and exploitation within disability services, demonstrating the urgent need for more robust and transparent policies and procedures.

HSU members have applauded several recommendations made by the Royal Commission, including:

  • A national disability support worker registration scheme, with portable leave entitlements to be built into the scheme's design
  • A review of Award pay rates to ensure equal remuneration for workers in the sector.

Members have campaigned strongly on these issues and it’s encouraging to see the Royal Commission agrees it’s time to properly value workers in the sector. Now we need to keep the pressure on and push for a better future, for clients and for workers!
