HSU members vow to take action over aged care pay rise

View Gerard Hayes’ message to aged care members here

Late last Friday, we learned that the Federal Government is now trying to back away from its election promise to aged care workers to ‘get wages moving’ in the sector. In its submission to the Fair Work Commission, the Government proposed that the 15% pay increase in the Commission’s interim decision should be phased in gradually, in two instalments over an 18-month period.

This is wrong and it is unconscionable. To abandon aged care workers and elderly Australians in care at this crucial moment is a gross betrayal.

Today I have written to the Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to express HSU members’ anger at this cowardly act. You can read that letter here.

I know that many of you have considered leaving aged care if wages don’t improve soon. I know that you’re tired. I know that you are holding on by your fingernails. But I also know that HSU members can get this done.

We’ve already seen an overwhelming response to the HSU’s email campaign to the Prime Minister. If you haven’t yet done so, add your voice here and tell your colleagues and family to do it too.

But that isn’t all. On the 8th of February next year, the HSU will be mounting a massive rally to let those politicians in Canberra know that we’re not going away. Save the date. It’s vital that every member who can attend, does attend. It’s your voice – make sure you use it.
