Union Win: HSU Medical Radiation Scientists negotiate MRS Graduates Determination

HSU members have been rigorously negotiating with the Ministry of Health to address longstanding inconsistent grading of MRS graduates working across NSW Health.

In great news, the advocacy and pressure members applied on the Ministry of Health has now achieved a Determination for the employment of MRS graduates – a major win in addressing the attraction of staff to the public health system.

This Determination not only fixes the grading of existing MRS graduates but also ensures that moving forward, all MRS graduates who have completed a four-year undergraduate degree and have full registration with AHPRA will be employed at Level 2 Year 1.

Congratulations to members for achieving this significant win for MRS graduates!

Finally, MRS graduates will be remunerated in line with their qualifications and experience.

There will be an HSU briefing for all MRS staff to understand the implications of this determination on Wednesday November 22 at 12pm. Registration is mandatory and can be done at this link.

Who does the Determination cover?

This Determination applies to MRS staff who are currently:

  1. paid at pay rates between level 1 year 1 and level 2 year 4 at the date of the Determination, and
  2. upon commencement with NSW Health were either:
    a. employed at level 1 year 1, or
    b. were employed at a level 2 rate calculated by counting their first year of service following graduation as equivalent to level 1 year 1.

This means that eligible MRS staff will be reclassified and advanced by one pay point if applicable and will continue to progress on their MRS anniversary date.

MRS graduates who worked in a private centre or who worked interstate prior to commencing employment with NSW Health will also have their first year of service (after their graduation) recognised as equivalent to level 1 year 1 – allowing them to be progressed according to their year of service and have their prior experience recognised.

This outcome could not have been secured without the hard work and engagement of HSU Medical Radiation Scientist members. This shows that when we fight collectively, we achieve great results!
