Mareeba EA ballot now open - HSU members concerned about low pay offer

All HSU members are invited to attend a Zoom meeting on Monday 2 May at 3pm, join online at https://us06web.zoom.us/j/83855875883 or via telephone (02) 8015 6011 (ID: 838 5587 5883).

Voting for your proposed Mareeba Aged Care Enterprise Agreement opens today.  HSU members pushed hard for a decent wage increase in this agreement, but Mareeba management are only offering a 1.6% wage increase. This isn’t good enough and that you deserve significantly better pay for all your hard work.

HSU members from across the sector are continuing to campaign for a real pay increase for all aged care workers. Our landmark case for a 25% increase to the Aged Care Award is currently before the Fair Work Commission and we will continue to campaign for better pay and conditions at work.

While Mareeba has fixed some of the major problems identified by HSU members, this agreement fails to deliver on key conditions that keep you up to date with colleagues at other aged care providers, including:

  • a very low pay increase of only 1.6%.
  • no paid parental leave for employees, leaving you only with the NES entitlement to unpaid leave.
  • giving Mareeba new powers to direct employees to an ‘independent medical examination’ by a doctor of Mareeba’s choosing.
  • not reimbursing employees for mandatory police checks, that are a requirement of your employment.
  • containing ‘Excessive Annual Leave’ provisions which benefit the employer, but do not provide the employee with the same rights.

You can a copy of the proposed agreement at this link. We encourage all members to read the offer carefully and have your say in the ballot. Voting opens today and will close at 9am on Wednesday 4 May.

If a majority vote ‘yes’ to accept the offer, the agreement will accepted and will be sent to the Fair Work Commission for approval. However, if a majority vote ‘no’ the agreement will not be approved, and the HSU will continue campaigning hard for a better deal.

All HSU members are invited to attend a Zoom meeting on Monday 2 May at 3pm, where we will discuss the offer and answer any questions that you may have. You can join the Zoom meeting online at https://us06web.zoom.us/j/83855875883 or via telephone by calling (02) 8015 6011 and entering Meeting ID: 838 5587 5883.
